Several
years ago I visited the Rothko Chapel in Texas.
For me, it was a depressing experience.
The negation of nature and the dark hostility of
the black paintings were, for me, the antithesis of a
spiritual experience in a chapel.
Eventually
I came to terms with that experience and my own needs and
designed The Chapel.
Redwood
timbers are linked together to form a small eight-paneled
room with an extending wall which forms the entry.
The timbers hold 27 symbolic forms carved in Rose
Aurora marble to represent the personas, pillars, and
clouds of paradise / heaven.
The cumulative effect is one of soaring, luminous
inner space.
