The Gateway

The Gateway is reminiscent of Torii gates, but  it is a gateway that you cannot walk through.  Marble carved to suggest the familiar Yin and Yang forms are present, but Yin is hung on one side of the gateway, Yang on the other.

My message is that biology is indeed a large part of destiny.  It is not possible for a man to see and understand the reality of a woman’s world, nor is it possible for a woman to see and understand the reality of a man’s world.  One can see only with one’s own eyes, through the filters of one’s own familial and socio-economic environment.

The Gateway takes its reflection of gender roles one step further.  Run a finger along the outer edge of the dark or Yang form, and you will note some roughness.  Now look at the light or Yin form, and you will see that a portion, the “tail”, has broken off and is placed apart from the main form.  This can be interpreted as indicating the beginning of erosion of the male cultural role, and a notable break with traditional roles by females.
