Every
culture has its shrines, its temples, synagogues,
churches, cathedrals.
Clearly, humanity needs and has always needed a
specific site, a place, usually an enclosed space which is
built as or declared to be a sacred place and consecrated
to sacred rituals.
I
designed and built The Temple for myself, to meet my own
need. The discovery, when it was finished, that I had created a
space which became unique and separate from the rest of
the space in my studio was a profound surprise.
In
my Temple, red enamel drips down and puddles on the altar
and is partially covered by the Earth Mother / Madonna
form carved in Rose Cristallina marble.
By placing the intrinsically female form over the
stream of “blood”
above the altar, I have addressed the need of humanity to
balance the patriarchal need for blood sacrifice with the
matriarchal need for creativity and growth.
Death
must be balanced with Life. |
